Today, on the day the UK leaves the EU, European Sun release The Future’s Female, a rallying cry for hope in a decade that threatens to be dark.
The song began with the recollection of a sad-but-true detail, the painful childhood story behind the first verse, and culminated in the realisation that almost all the things that make us despair, threaten the future, or endanger equality in the world have one thing in common: men. That said, the song, a cross between The TV Personalities, Jonathan Richman and Heavenly, never takes itself too seriously, or it wouldn't be rhyming 'Venus' with 'penis'... The Future’s Female features guest backing vocals from Sarah Corrie (Velocette, Comet Gain). The song is released on the day the UK leaves the European Union as a reminder of quite how we got there, while the band’s name itself makes sure we never forget that we are still Europeans, regardless of political chicanery. Most recording begins with the rhythm section, but we've done it backwards, and are adding the rhythm to the guitar in most cases. Which presents a challenge when the guitarist isn't in time! Hence the extreme look of concentration on their faces... Here we are recording the basic acoustic guitar and voice with which the songs begin.
In not one but two different rooms. One of which is much colder than the other. Recording has begun in The Sunday School, Kent, for the debut release of European Sun.
Three songs were trialled back in August 2019, with Steve bringing the words and music in his head up from Somerset for Amy and Rob to wrap in garlands of indie pop sensibility. Those first recordings went well and now the work on the rest of the collection begins. It's a labour of love for a new decade. Steve was a founding member of The Short Stories in 2007, sharing songwriting with Tim Rippington (Beatnik Filmstars, Forest Giants). They released four albums between 2008 and 2014. After the release of the last Short Stories album, 'Send My Love To Everyone', Steve turned back to playing with just a simple acoustic guitar, and performed quiet Short Stories shows solo or with legendary bassist Chris Wilson (Lloyd Cole, Love Spit Love), while the rest of the band became the Charlie Tipper Experiment. At one such show, in the summer of 2018, Rob and Amy (The Catenary Wires) offered to play with him on one song, 'The Future's Female', and out of that chance collaboration the idea of European Sun was born. The Catenary Wires' latest album ‘Til the Morning’ was released in 2019 on Tapete Records. Prior to that they played in Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Marine Research and Tender Trap. Ian Button, brought in to add drums, has a longer musical CV than you could care to compile, which a quick google will reveal (including Death In Vegas, The Thrashing Doves and Papernut Cambridge). The recordings will be released on WIAIWYA Records in 2020. Here, Rob has a think about it all... |
